Belgium recently ended a spell of 541 days without a government, setting a world record for a western democracy. However, the vacuum at the top didn’t stop the euthanasia bandwagon from rolling forward. As soon as the new Prime Minister, Elio di Rupo, was sworn in, the official Federal Committee on Euthanasia was ready with an open letter, asking that the 2002 euthanasia law be updated, as it is now considered too restrictive by its supporters.
The proposed changes to loosen its terms are:
v Advance directives to refuse medical intervention, at present valid for five years, should have no time limit.
v Doctors who refuse to perform euthanasia must refer to a willing colleague.
v Assisted suicide should be permitted.
v It should be permitted to euthanise persons with dementia, if they have made an advanced directive.
v There should be no age bar for euthanasia, thereby permitting minors to choose to die.
