The big news this January is the Minister for Health’s announcement of the members of the “expert group” which is to lay out the options available to the government in responding to the European Court of Human Rights, which ruled in 2010 in A, B, and C v. Ireland that Irish law on abortion must have greater clarity. There will be much more to be said about this group over the coming months, but I am sorry to have to report that the initial impressions are alarming.
The appointees include Deirdre Madden, the tireless campaigner for research on human embyros from UCC. Even more appalling, the minister saw fit to include a member of the radical pro-abortion campaigning group Doctors for Choice. Ailish Ní Riain has a long pro-abortion history. There are other members too about whom we have reservations. It is something of a puzzle how Fine Gael imagines that this group fulfils its pre-election commitment to ensure “that women in pregnancy will receive whatever treatments are necessary to safeguard their lives, and that the duty of care to preserve the life of the baby will also be upheld”.
